It's taken me about four months of discord and out-of-whackness to realize that there's a formula for me to be the best version of myself. Seven hours of sleep, eight hour work day with a one hour lunch, one hour at the gym, two out of my three daily meals being incredibly healthy, thirty minute phone conversation with a friend, twenty minutes of discovering new music, twenty minute morning thank-you and gratitude walk, thirty minutes of reading, twice a week of quality friend time, twice a month of trying out a new spot in DC, one monthly adventure (which could be as small as building a bonfire and eating s'mores in my backyard, wink), and one incredible yearly vacation.
I've by no means achieved a zen-like state of being, but what I have done is figured out a formula of balance for my life. Eating healthy makes me feel invincible, sweating it out at the gym helps me sleep better, having a great night of sleep makes me refreshed and energized, quality time with friends makes me feel alive and connected, and discovering new music makes me happy. Will I fall short? Yup. Will I continue to strive for balance? Absolutely.
I always think about my dad. His prioritizes in life were pretty simple. Provide for his family, spend quality time with his kids, make sure that he never missed his kids games and the Colts games. He (seriously) structured his life around these things. People he worked with knew that if his kids had a ball game, he was out the door at the appropriate time. His kids knew that if the Colts were on, he'd be found in front of the tv with a massive bowl of popcorn and there wasn't a chance in hell that the tv would be turned to another station. As a family, we knew that we'd never go without.
Like I said, after months of discord, I've learned that it's important for me to put in a solid day of work, then walk out the door at the appropriate time. It's important for me to be social. It's important for me to take an amazing trip. It's important for me to get my rump on the treadmill.
Daily Challenge:
List out your life prioritizes and based on those prioritizes what will it take to create balance.
Maybe it's not going out to eat as much so that you can get a maid, maybe it's a simple weekly phone call with your bestie, maybe it's a monthly fro-yo date with your daughter. No clue where your zen-sweet-spot is but you'll figure it out.
